Stone Mountain State Park, NC Fieldtrip
The graduate students from FAU and I decided to take advantage of being close to the Appalachians during SEDAAG 2008 to go on a trip up to the mountains. We don't see many mountains down in South Florida, and one of us was still looking for her first snow. We (Gillian, Erika, Cindy, and I) drove from Greensboro to Roaring Gap, NC and hiked 8 miles around Stone Mountain State Park. No snow, but plenty of ice around the waterfalls. Below are 2 videos of water flowing downslope between a thin layer of ice and a large granite outcrop. Also, included are pictures of a 200+ ft waterfall and views of Stone Mountain and of the Blue Ridge from the summit.
